The 2011 Military Bowl is a fun game for football connoisseurs. Both the Toledo Rockets and Air Force Falcons like to mix up personnel groupings and packages. Creativity will be abundant.
Toledo Rockets vs. Air Force Falcons – Wednesday, December 28
Sports betting line: Toledo -3
Why Toledo Will Win
When you do your homework and assess your best best sportsbook on this game, you cant judge a book by its cover. Its true that the Mid-American Conference is the tenth-strongest league in the Football Bowl Subdivision, ahead of only the Sun Belt. However, the team from Toledo that is making its way to the nations capital city is much more accomplished than its MAC identifier or its 8-4 record would initially indicate. Former coach Tim Beckman did high-quality work with a team that fell apart on defense in the one game it couldnt afford to lose, a home date with MAC West Division rival Northern Illinois earlier this season. When Toledo lost that 63-60 shootout, it lost leverage in its division and thereby was denied in its quest for a conference championship… a conference championship Northern Illinois won the other night in Detroit over Ohio University. In the rest of its 2011 schedule, however, Toledo has performed with distinction.

The Rockets have four losses to their credit, and all of them were noble in some way, even the shootout loss to a distinguished Northern Illinois squad. One of Toledos losses, in fact, shouldnt have been a loss. The Rockets watched Syracuse miss an extra point late in regulation, which should have set up the Rockets for a game-winning field goal attempt on their subsequent drive. Yet, the Big East replay booth inexplicably upheld a call on the field which signaled that the kick was good. Toledo did kick a field goal on its ensuing drive, but instead of producing a 30-29 win, the three-pointer merely created overtime at 30-all. Syracuse won the game 33-30 in overtime, creating one of the bigger on-field controversies of the 2011 season.
Toledos other losses had their share of nobility: The Rockets lost by five points at Ohio State and were denied in the Buckeyes red zone on the final play of regulation. Toledo also pushed Boise State hard before committing a devastating red-zone turnover midway through the third quarter to lose hope of an upset. Toledo is still viewed by many observers as the most complete team in the MAC.
Why Air Force Will Win
The college football betting  experts who are looking at this contest will tell you that Air Force coach Troy Calhoun is a tough customer in bowl games. He beat Georgia Tech last year and Houston the year before. Air Force retained the Commander-In-Chiefs Trophy this season and played Boise State on relatively even terms for four hard-fought quarters on the smurf turf of Idaho. This is still a fun team to watch with quarterback Tim Jefferson directing an offense that gives defensive coordinators dozens of different looks per game, often changing formations before the snap. If you love thoughtful and creative uses of personnel, Calhoun like the Toledo staff revels in his ability to mix things up. The fact that Beckman is no longer the Toledo coach (hes now at Illinois) should aid the Falcons in their efforts as well.

Who Will Win
Its hard to play when your coach has departed for another school. Toledo was probably the favorite with Tim Beckman on the sidelines, but with Beckman now at the University of Illinois, Air Force is probably going to have more fuel in the tank. Take the Falcons over the Rockets in this bowl battle.

College Football Betting Pick: Air Force

The 2011 Champs Sports Bowl will make many college football fans nostalgic. The Florida State Seminoles and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will evoke memories of the 1990s this December.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Florida State Seminoles – Thursday, December 29
Sports betting line: Florida State -3
Why Notre Dame Will Win
When you do your homework and assess your best best sportsbook on this game, you cant deny the notion that this will be a trip down memory lane. Take yourself back in time if youre able to: In November of 1993, the No. 1 Florida State Seminoles traveled to South Bend, Indiana, to take on the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in one of the most-hyped regular-season games of the past 20 years. Its reasonable to say that the presence of Notre Dame in a matchup of such significance and prominence enabled Seminoles-Irish to attain a level of buildup matched only by this years LSU-Alabama encounter. Florida State and Notre Dame both moved the needle in terms of national interest not just because they were recognizable programs, but because their coaches Bobby Bowden for FSU and Lou Holtz for Notre Dame were very media friendly, always ready with a quip or quote that would delight the national press corps. Oh, and the two teams had some special players as well. Eventual 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward commanded the Seminoles devastating offense, while Notre Dame was powered by defensive tackle Bryant Young, offensive tackle Aaron Taylor, and other NFL-worthy stalwarts on both lines.
Notre Dame won that game in 1993, and the Fighting Irish could very well take this game, too. Florida State has been a snake-bitten team this past season. The quarterback spot has been a constant source of inconsistency due to both injuries and a spotty offensive line. Moreover, Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher has made poor decisions in endgame or clock-management situations, creating a crisis of confidence for the Seminoles. Notre Dame has the better coach in this game, Brian Kelly, and will have a chance to keep Florida State on its heels.
Why Florida State Will Win
The college football betting  experts who are looking at this contest could very well say that the best reason to take Florida State has little to do with Xs and Os. Brian Kelly, for all of his credentials as a head coach, has failed at Notre Dame, at least in one key respect: Kelly has simply not managed to cultivate a quarterback the way he did with Tony Pike and Zach Collaros at the University of Cincinnati. Kelly has thrown his players under the bus, specifically recruits who were brought to South Bend by former coach Charlie Weis. The negativity in the Notre Dame locker room over the course of the season is likely to make Notre Dame far less interested in the outcome of this game. Expect Florida State to carry a positive attitude to the field and whip the Fighting Irish.

Who Will Win
Its true: Notre Dames players really grumbled about Brian Kelly this season. The Fighting Irish do not like playing for him at this point in time. Jimbo Fisher has not done a great job at Florida State, but his players havent quit on him. Take Florida State because of inspiration, not perspiration.

Houston at Indianapolis

Dec-21-2011 By admin

TIME: 08:20 P.M. EST
VENUE: Lucas Oil Stadium

After dominating the AFC South over the previous eight seasons, the Peyton Manning-less Indianapolis Colts have given way to the Houston Texans.

Even though these teams most recent efforts more resembled previous seasons than the current one, this may be Houstons best chance to finally win in Indianapolis.

Looking to regroup from their first defeat in more than two months, the division champion Texans visit a Colts team looking to build on its first win of the season Thursday night.

With Manning under center, Indianapolis had won seven of the past eight South titles and made the playoffs in all nine years since the division was created in 2002 – Houstons inaugural season.

The Colts had been 15-1 in this series before losing two of the last three meetings, including a season-opening 34-7 defeat at Houston on Sept. 11. However, the Texans are 0-9 all-time at Indianapolis, giving up an average of 32.6 points, but this is the first time theyve played there without having to face Manning.

Then again, Indianapolis (1-13) is coming off its first win, shocking Tennessee 27-13 on Sunday.

“I think (the Colts are) feeling very good after what happened last week,” Kubiak said. “… You know, the Thursday night game gets a lot of attention. We know theyll play well. Like I said, our history in that building hasnt been very good, so were going to have to go change that and play much better.”

The Texans secured their first postseason berth and division title in Week 14. They entered Sunday having won a franchise-record seven straight and coming off a last-second 20-19 victory over Cincinnati, but they lost 28-13 at home to a sub-.500 Carolina team.

Houston had been tied for the conferences best record but fell one game behind New England and is now one of three AFC teams at 10-4.

“It is a wake-up call, and its up to us as leaders to let our team know what exactly this game is,” defensive end Antonio Smith told the teams official website. “I wouldnt say it has to happen, but if it does happen, its needed for you to be battle-tested in a situation like this, for us to grow as a team. You got to take your (knocks). You got to take your hits on the chin.”

“When you become the team, just like when we face teams that people give high praise, you got the underdog coming to knock you right off the pedestal.”

The Texans find themselves in a similar situation Thursday and likely know better than to overlook a Colts team that has plenty to celebrate following an 0-13 start.

Indianapolis rallied in the second half to defeat the Titans, posting its first victory without Manning in more than 14 years.

“Any time you get a win, its good, and these guys have been working hard,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “The guys havent been complaining, theyve worked together, theyve fought together, so its good to get a good result. I think it gives our guys a little bit of a lift.”

Making his third consecutive start, Dan Orlovsky was just 11 of 17 for 82 yards but threw for the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, and no Colts passes were intercepted for the first time since Week 5. Donald Brown carried 16 times for a career-high 161 yards, including an 80-yard TD run late in the fourth.

“It means a lot (to win), but were a proud ball club so one game out of 13 or 14, we still have a ways to go,” defensive end Robert Mathis said.

A big reason Indianapolis dominated this series was the Texans werent very good defensively, but theyve made major strides this year, ranking second in total yards allowed at 277.9 per game and fifth against the run (96.8 ypg). However, they gave up a season-worst 166 yards on the ground Sunday and two rushing TDs, one more than they surrendered during the seven-game win streak.

Rookie T.J. Yates, thrown under center with season-ending injuries to Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart, also had a forgettable performance as he went 19 of 30 for 212 yards and two interceptions.

“Weve got a lot of things to fix and maybe just a quick turnaround is the thing,” Kubiak said.

With Yates still getting accustomed to his new role, the offense continues to lean on Arian Foster. The Pro Bowler had his fifth 100-yard rushing effort and eighth touchdown in eight games Sunday, running for 109 yards and catching five passes for 58.

In two career meetings with Indianapolis, Foster has totaled 405 yards from scrimmage and four TDs. He rushed for a career-high 231 yards and three scores during a 34-24 win Sept. 12, 2010.

All-Pro wideout Andre Johnson will miss a third straight contest and ninth this season due to a hamstring injury. Its unknown if defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who went on medical leave after undergoing kidney and gall bladder surgery last week, will be available to coach.

CBSSports.com w Marian Gaborik hasnt been a part of the Rangers-Devils rivalry for that long, but its been long enough for him to grasp how intense it is.

“Its always a big game between these two teams,” said Gaborik, who scored two of New Yorks three third-period goals in a 4-1 victory over New Jersey on Tuesday night. “You have to be ready to play these guys, because its going to be tough every time.”

Gaborik is in only his third season with the Rangers, and Tuesday was the first of six meetings this season between the teams. Henrik Lundqvist has a lot more experience, and a lot of success against the Devils.

“I enjoy playing against this team,” said Lundqvist, who made 30 saves in earning his 23rd win over the Devils in 37 games. “Its always a great challenge to play them. Theres a lot of action. We all knew that this was going to be a tough one.”

Lundqvist has a career 1.85 goals-against average against the Devils.

Gaborik, who reached 600 NHL points with his first goal, also helped set up Artem Anisimovs second-period tally that tied the game 1-1. New York (20-9-4) won its second straight and broke the Devils four-game winning streak.

Anisimov also had an assist, Carl Hagelin added a short-handed goal, and Derek Stepan chipped in three assists for the Rangers.

Travis Zajacs first goal of the season gave the Devils a 1-0 lead in the first period. Zajac missed the first 30 games of the season following Achilles tendon surgery.

New Jersey was without leading scorer Patrik Elias, who sat out because of an illness.

Anisimov tied it with his seventh goal with 2:30 left in the second period and Gaborik broke the deadlock 4:45 into the third after Anisimov sent a backhanded shot off the post that trickled behind goalie Martin Brodeur. Gaborik alertly knocked the rebound past Brodeur.

“Thats how we score,” Gaborik said. “We get a lot of rebound, second-chance goals. I just try to stay in front and be there to lay it in.”

Hagelin made it 3-1 with 5:18 remaining, the fourth goal in 13 games for the rookie left wing. Gaborik closed the scoring with 3 seconds left, netting his 19th goal – one shy of the NHL lead.

“We kept on scrapping and fought through it,” Rangers coach John Tortorella said. “We started to take over in the second period and then kept on coming in the third. Hank made some key saves at key times and we just tried to stay with it. Eventually, we found a way to score some goals.”

The heated rivals got going quickly. Just three seconds after the opening faceoff, Devils forward Cam Janssen fought former New Jersey forward Mike Rupp in an extended fight.

Zajacs goal was his first since March 15 against Atlanta. He had played in a franchise-record 401 consecutive games before missing the start of this season.

Hagelin scored the 10th short-handed goal of the season against the Devils.

However, New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer wasnt upset with his teams performance.

“We had a lot of opportunities, but their guy didnt allow us to get the second goal,” DeBoer said. “If we got the second goal, we could have taken charge of the game. I thought it was one of our better games, maybe our best 60-minute effort this year.

“We didnt come out on the right end, but I liked the way we played. Tip the cap to their guy. We have to find a way to solve him because we play them five more times.”

Notes

Elias, who has 13 goals and 16 assists, also didnt skate on Monday because he was ill. Devils D Henrik Tallinder sat out a third straight game due to back spasms. Rangers F Sean Avery was again a healthy scratch. Devils rookie D Adam Larsson was expected to fly home to Sweden after the game due to the death of his grandmother. Larsson will miss Fridays home game against Washington, and Mondays game at Carolina.

CBSSports.com wi The Oklahoma City Thunder took some satisfaction in swe even if it wasnt the Western Conference finals.

James Harden had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Russell Westbrook added 12 points and the Thunder beat the Mavericks for the second time in three days, winning 87-83 on Tuesday night.

Oklahoma City won 106-92 at Dallas on Sunday, although Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd didnt play for the Mavericks in that game. Both saw action Tuesday but mostly struggled.

Jerome Randle led Dallas with 17 points while Brandan Wright had 12.

Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant, a two-time NBA scoring champ, had 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting in 21 minutes. He sat out the entire fourth quarter, as did Nowitzki and Kidd.

Independence Bowl Betting: Missouri And North Carolina Have Much To Prove
By Blake Frazier
The 2011 Independence Bowl offers a matchup between two teams who can certainly use a momentum boost heading into the 2012 offseason. Urgency defines this clash on the Bayou.
Missouri Tigers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels – Monday, December 26
Sports betting line: Missouri -5
Why Missouri Will Win
When you do your homework and assess your best best sportsbook on this game, look at this interesting little factoid: Missouri lost each and every one of its games to teams that while not finishing the year in the top 25 were ranked at the time they took on the Tigers. The list includes at Arizona State, at Oklahoma, at Kansas State, Oklahoma State and at Baylor. The Big 12 Conference was the deepest top-to-bottom league in the country, making Missouris 7-5 record a lot better than a number of other teams 7-5 records. Mizzou quarterback James Franklin had an impressive 7.75 yards per attempt average, which resulted in a 141.3 efficiency rating. If Franklin plays up to his potential or at least avoid untimely fumbles that dogged him during the regular season, Missouri has more weapons than North Carolina.
Why North Carolina Will Win
The college football betting  experts who are looking at this contest have to be mindful of the “grumble factor,” or when a team doesnt want to play in a particularly low-rent bowl game. For a season that started with high expectations, the Missouri Tigers probably didnt land in the postseason destination they had hoped for. Coach Gary Pinkels team was selected to play in the Independence Bowl this past Sunday. Sadly for the Tigers, Shreveport, Louisiana, is a familiar location for the Missouri faithful. This will be the third time in nine years that the Tigers will be playing in the Independence Bowl. And people wondered why the higher-ups in Columbia were looking so hard to get out of the Big 12 Conference.
The thing that is extra hard for people in Missouri to wrap their heads around is that their Tigers were passed over by four Big 12 bowl games that selected teams with worse or identical records. This should come as no surprise to Missouri fans, who have gotten used to being left behind when bowl selection time comes around. If you really want to get a Missouri Tigers blood boiling just bring up the BCS bowl selection process in 2007, when Mizzou beat Kansas late in the season but got passed over for the Orange Bowl by the Jayhawks.
Despite all of this, there is still a football game that needs to played against a very competitive bunch from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Hopefully there are no Christmas hangovers for both teams, since the game between the Tigers and coach Everett Withers Tar Heels is the day after Christmas. However, a Missouri hangover is exactly what could give North Carolina a win.

Who Will Win
After a month off, James Franklin the player, not the coach at Vanderbilt University should play well. If that happens, Missouri should win this game. Period.

College Football Betting Pick: Missouri

One of the most important AFC games heading in to this weekend will feature two division rivals at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of momentum, in a crucial battle that will have major playoff implications. The Kansas City Chiefs will not compete in this years postseason, but after ending the Green Bay Packers run at perfection with a 19-14 win last week, they will have the opportunity to play spoiler once again against the AFC West rival Oakland Raiders as sports betting favorites at home.

Oakland Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

NFL Betting Lines: Kansas City Chiefs 1

The Raiders played spoiler against themselves in their collapse against the Detroit Lions last week, a game in which they led by 13 with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter before allowing consecutive touchdowns to lose in regulation. Oakland is still just one game back with two to play, but this is now a must-win situation.

NFL Betting Preview: Oakland Raiders

With the Denver Broncos falling to the New England Patriots, the Raiders were in perfect position to bounce back in the AFC West, five minutes away from moving back in to a tie for top spot. Now, head coach Hue Jackson will have to find a way to get his team to refocus and prepare to finish strong, a tough task for any coach after the way they lost their last game. Quarterback Carson Palmer threw for 367 yards and a touchdown against the Lions, so he isnt the problem, but the Raiders will need more from their rushing attack, and running back Michael Bush in particular. It is hard to place blame on the offense after the defense gave up 14 points in five minutes, but everyone will need to be better with their season on the line.

NFL Betting Preview: Kansas City Chiefs

While Chiefs fans wont get to watch their team play in the postseason, they have to appreciate that they have already watched their team pull off the biggest upset of the season by ending the Packers perfect run. Kansas City was able to hold Aaron Rodgers to a less than 50-percent completion rate, while recording four sacks and three tackles for a loss. Kyle Orton proved that he deserved the start by throwing for 299 yards without turning the ball over, and he looked as confident as he has ever been throughout his career. The Chiefs concentrated on controlling possession and playing smart football under interim coach Romeo Crennel, and they will be a legitimate threat again this week as they look to do the same again.

NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The sportsbooks have the Chiefs listed as favorites after they beat the Packers, but they could have trouble doing it again after such an emotional win. The Raiders will lay it all on the line in a must-win game, and should be able to pull this one out in what should be a close battle until the end.

NFL Betting Pick: Oakland Raiders

Pittsburgh at San Francisco

CBSSports.com wire reports
Dec. 20, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO — From the swirling winds off the bay that can play fits with the football to the 1989 earthquake that rocked the World Series, Candlestick Park has long been an unpredictable venue known for its challenges.

nearly became a Monday Night Fiasco when everything went dark — twice.

San Franciscos lights-out return to prime time in a 20-3 victory against the Steelers helped salvage what could have been an embarrassing evening for everyone involved on the NFLs biggest stage after a pair of power outages delayed the game for close to 35 minutes in all.

“I just feel like San Francisco took a big step to show the NFL and to show the state of California that they need a new stadium,” Steelers safety Ryan Clark said. “I think it was a very strategic move, and Candlestick may be no more.”

Good thing theres a state-of-the-art $1 billion stadium in the works.

The 49ers rode their top-ranked run defense once again to keep ailing Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger off balance and maintain a hold on the NFCs No. 2 playoff seed and a first-round bye.

“Electric atmosphere tonight,” tweeted team president Jed York — unclear if his pun was intended.

Vernon Davis caught a 1-yard touchdown pass for the 49ers (11-3) one play after setting himself up with a 21-yard reception from Alex Smith, Frank Gore ran for a 5-yard score and David Akers kicked field goals of 22 and 38 yards to overtake Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for San Franciscos single-season scoring record.

“I think we showed the world we can play the game of football on a national stage,” Davis said. “At the end of the day thats what its all about: respect.”

The Steelers (10-4) missed a key chance to take sole possession of first place in the AFC North and gain the AFCs No. 1 playoff seed.

Roethlisberger, playing on a sprained left ankle that had Big Ben in a walking boot during the week, suffered two early interceptions and another in the waning minutes — and a couple of light structures flickered as the final ticks elapsed.

Even all those Terrible Towel-waving Steelers supporters in the sellout crowd of 69,732 couldnt will their team when San Franciscos unique home-field advantage became two blackout delays.

“Its very frustrating to feel like you let down your team and your fans and your coaches. Its tough,” Roethlisberger said. “Im not going to make excuses. I played a bad football game, I turned the ball over and that ones on me.”

San Francisco became the first team in NFL history to hold an opponent without a rushing touchdown through each of the first 14 games.

“I also want to recognize our defense,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. “NFL record for not allowing a rushing touchdown in 14 games. I think that is huge.”

Carlos Rogers, Dashon Goldson and Tarell Brown made interceptions, while Rookie of the Year candidate Aldon Smith had 2½ sacks for San Franciscos stingy defense.

The 49ers also have gone 36 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher. Rashard Mendenhall had 15 carries for 64 yards.

“This team has really become a team,” Harbaugh said. Im really proud of them for that.”

Roethlisberger still finished 25 for 44 for 330 yards, but was sacked three times. After his second pick, he fumed as he limped off the field and could be seen yelling into his chin strap.

The 49ers made a big statement in their most meaningful home game since their last trip to the playoffs in January 2003, when San Francisco came from behind to stun the New York Giants 39-38 in one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history.

“It was probably the biggest home game since Ive been here,” Alex Smith said.

They had to wait 20 minutes to get started after the power went out the first time. It didnt seem to faze San Francisco.

“It wasnt too bad. It was unusual,” said Alex Smith, who went 18 for 31 for 187 yards. “You dont expect to have to deal with it, and it happened twice. But it was the same for both teams.”

Smith wasnt sacked after being taken down 18 times in the previous three games, including nine in the Niners prime time flop at Baltimore on Thanksgiving night against Jim Harbaughs big brother, John.

Jim Harbaugh prepared for the Steelers by comparing notes with his brother after the Ravens won both meetings this season with Pittsburgh in one of the AFCs fiercest rivalries.

The Steelers are 0-for-Harbaugh this season.

“I think we need to acknowledge that was 49er football tonight,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “We played the game on their terms.”

The 37-year-old Akers, who long admired Rice from afar growing up in Kentucky, topped Rices 138 points scored in 1987.

Yet Akers has said he doesnt feel deserving of the points mark over a great such as Rice — who clowned around on the field before the game catching passes from fellow Hall of Famer and former QB Steve Young, including one in the end zone.

It was after Akers second field goal when everything went dark for a second time. Thousands of flashbulbs went off in the midst of the black, with thousands of fans sitting in darkness — including all those Steelers fans who travel the country with their team.

NFL security chief Jeff Miller said he witnessed a transformer blow up while he was monitoring a gate outside the stadium, where a shooting during the preseason already put a negative light on this venue.

The second delay came early in the second quarter and halted the game again between the playoff-bound teams for about 15 minutes. Miller and other NFL officials gathered in the press box to assess the situation, remaining in constant contact with the commissioners office.

This was the 49ers only Monday night game this season and their final regular-season home game at Candlestick Park. The NFL certainly will want to make sure there are no problems when San Francisco plays host to a playoff game next month as NFC West champions — and Miller said he remains confident Candlestick can capably host a playoff game.

“Never in my life have I been a part of a blackout in a stadium,” Davis said.

The Steelers missed linebacker James Harrison, who served his one-game suspension for a helmet to facemask hit on Browns quarterback Colt McCoy on Dec. 8.

“We better lick our wounds pretty quickly because we have a quick turnaround here,” Tomlin said.

This marked the fourth time in history that two teams faced off with 10 victories and a winning percentage of at least .750 — and San Francisco has played in all of them, the last on Dec. 15, 1997, with the 12-2 49ers vs. 11-3 Broncos.

Notes

The 49ers lost left tackle Joe Staley to a second-half leg injury. WR Ted Ginn Jr. injured his right ankle on the second-half kickoff. Pittsburgh was held to 84 yards rushing.
